EMPOWER. EDUCATE. LEARN MORE SERIES!

All throughout 2023 we hosted intimate behind-the-scenes events at various library branches as part of our Empower. Educate. Learn More Series. We got to hear from local authors, program participants, and learn more about the Library.

We celebrated Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month at the West Valley Branch Library!

We started off with some networking over complimentary refreshments before Vice Mayor Kamei welcomed attendees and started our event. City Librarian Jill Bourne and SJPLF CEO Dawn Coppin discussed AAPI representation in the Library’s materials and programs. Then, Dawn introduced two participants from our workforce training program, Resilience Corps, Amelia Uytingco and Gurjyot Mahal. It was enlightening to hear how this program gave them firsthand work experience, a living wage, and impacted their lives directly.

Finally, our special guest, Dorcas Cheng-Tozun, award-winning author joined Board Member Rebecca Lee for an inspiring conversation about her literary journey to becoming a published AAPI author. She even shared a passage from her upcoming book, Social Justice for the Sensitive Soul.
