About Vicky Nguyen

In her debut memoir, Boat Baby, where heroism meets humor, NBC News anchor and correspondent Vicky Nguyen tells the story of her family’s daring escape from communist Vietnam and her unlikely journey from refugee to reporter with laughter and fierce love.

Born in Saigon, Vietnam, Vicky Nguyen and her parents fled by boat in 1979, surviving a pirate attack and landing in a Malaysian refugee camp for ten months where she learned to walk. Sponsored by a family in Eugene, Oregon, she experienced a Vietnamese-American childhood.

After growing up in various California and Nevada cities, she attended the University of San Francisco on a scholarship, despite being rejected by Stanford. Her first TV job was in Orlando, where she worked as a “one man band.” She later reported in Reno, even winning a small slot machine jackpot.

A midnight call led her to FOX10 in Phoenix for three years before she returned to the Bay Area at NBC (formerly NBC11), rising to anchor/senior investigative reporter. In 2019, she moved to New York as an investigative and consumer correspondent for NBC News.

Vicky’s stories can be seen across all NBC platforms including the Today Show, 3rd Hour of Today, Nightly News with with Tom Llamas and NBC News Now.
