Community Support is Important and Easy

You can help create warm and welcoming Learning Centers

Why do we need your generous support?

The branches of the San José Public Library system are funded in part by tax dollars and allocations from the City of San José. But this is a small percentage of the property and sales taxes that are not otherwise designated to state, county and educational purposes. The City must allocate its funds to many essential services such as public safety and health.

Simply put, tax revenue is insufficient to support the San José Public Library System at the level of excellence and service that our City's residents demand and deserve. We are very grateful to the community for passing Measure S in November 2004. This parcel tax funds 71 % of all new materials purchased, as well as provide programming for children (including pre-school story time, after school programs and outreach programs to pre-schoolers in daycare), and maintenance and upgrade of library technology.

What Your Gifts Will Provide

Your contributions make a difference! With your help, the Library can continue to develop significant collections in many different languages, maintain sophisticated mixed-media resources, and provide community lectures and other outreach programs and educational services for all ages.

In the case of the Foundation's "Branching Out" campaign, private philanthropy is urgently needed to outfit each expanded or newly created facility with state-of-the-art technology and comfortable, well-designed furnishings and fixtures.

Approximately $500,000 is needed per branch. In each neighborhood served by a branch library, community supporters will help outfit the libraries as welcoming, well-equipped, useful and comfortable facilities that serve their community's needs.

All gifts to the San José Public Library Foundation in support of the Library System are welcome and much appreciated. Because the Foundation is an independent nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable organization, donations to the Foundation are fully tax-deductible as allowed by law.

In addition to personal checks, donors may contribute gifts through Family Foundations, Workplace Giving Campaigns, or Corporate Matching Gift Programs.

Family Foundations and Donor-Advised Funds

If you have a Family Foundation or a Donor-Advised Fund through the Community Foundation of Silicon Valley, or other philanthropic management organization, you can make a gift to the Foundation by authorizing contributions from your fund.

Workplace Giving Campaigns

Donors may make cash gifts directly to the Foundation by designating a payroll deduction or making an outright, one-time gift through the United Way or other workplace giving program offered by their employers. Please write "San José Public Library Foundation" to specify the beneficiary of your gift.

Matching Gift Programs

Donors whose companies participate in matching gift programs can double the value of their gift by requesting a matching gift from their employer. A copy of the matching gift form must be submitted with your own contribution.

Tribute Gifts

Gifts may be made in honor or in memory of a loved one. Acknowledgement is sent to the person being honored, or to the family of the individual for whom a memorial has been donated.

Donor Recognition

Special recognition opportunities within the branch libraries are available.

  • Donors who make gifts of $100 or more to the Branching Out campaign will receive permanent recognition, in a format appropriate to the setting, in the branch of their choice.
  • Donors who make gifts of $1,000 or more will be recognized on a Donor Wall in the branch of their choice, in an area designated by the architects for visibility and compatibility with the building’s design.
  • Donors who make gifts of $5,000 or more will, in addition to their acknowledgement on the Donor Wall, will also be elligible to receive recognition in a specified room or area in the branch of their choice, based on availability of spaces. more...
